it's a coming of age story - still not quite grown up but aware of the changes and what lies deep inside. The elements, weather, cliffs, etc., are a metaphor for natures internal obstacles to self awareness and in this case, becoming an adult. As an aside, some people never become self aware or an adult no matter how long they live..
