Why did he act like he cared just to now say that he only cared about my looks.?

My bf and I were together for about 3 months b/f we both left for a whole semester - I for study abroad in Japan and he for military training (this was planned before we had met). While we were together he was THE sweetest guy. He acted like he actually CARED about ME. I thought his feelings were real and that it was more than just lust. He really had me and everyone else convinced. While we were away, we didn't keep in touch (boot camp). I wasn't sure if he'd care fro me or even remember me. Now we've both come back and he got in touch with me. We went out and had a great night - very pionate and heartfelt. I was overjoyed to see him and to see that he still cared for me. (FYI we both knew when we left that i wouldn't be coming back to our college because I had gotten into Julliard's music program). anyway, a few days after that we started talking on aim and he basically said that he never really cared for me
